Today

I wonder if I didn’t dream big enough.

I didn’t eat a lot of days and nights while I lived in Florida — just so I could afford my rent.

Asking my parents for money was a no.
Probably because my ego stopped me.
And mostly because taking money feels like a
transaction for my obedience in Indian families.

Love ain’t like that.
At least mine’s not.

So yes, I’d rather starve than feel like I owe                       someone.

My mom would call all the time to ask what I ate, and I’d usually lie. She knew, I know she knew. How did she know? She mentioned one night, “you use my card ok, don’t go hungry, dika.”

I haven’t used her card in 3 years now.

Dika means daughter, by the way.

It was $850 a month. Living with 3 college girls. They’d see me once or twice a month. I was always working.

That was 2024, and my dream became to
1) not worry about what I’m gonna eat that night/how I’ll pay for it
2) to work in professional sports/go to the league
3) live alone
4) continue to love my life and what I do
5) clear all my debt

Today

I am living my dream. And i’m sitting here                                   wondering, did I not dream big enough?

Why does it still feel like something isn’t there?

                                       This can’t be it, right?

I am happy.
Thank you God, for seeing me through my battles, my hunger, my lowest lows, and my highest highs. Because today, I am living the dream I once dreamt because of you, God.

And I am so privileged to say that.
I worked so hard for this.
I moved to two cities alone. No family, no friends.
And I make this shit look easy.
Being alone, it’s not easy, but i’ve learned to love me in ways I never thought were possible.

               Excuse the tangent. Anyways —

I say “did I not dream big enough?” cause it almost feels like I boxed myself in a little. Maybe because growing up, not a single person of my color/sex/ethnicity existed or THRIVED or even GOT RESPECT for being in the creative sports industry.

It’s still like that too, my job is seen as a joke.
But I don’t need respect to do what I love.

                       So keep laughin ho!

I don’t do this shit for y’all, it’s fr for me.

I guess younger me dreamt of a normal life: a job, a car, a one-bedroom apartment, and to laugh and smile.

I just wanted to exist and make photography my career.

Because my dream seemed impossible and almost
a joke to most people, including my dad. He was just             scared it wouldn’t work out for me.

So I had to prove a point to myself and well, I guess I did.

What do we do when our dreams do come true?

                           Do I start dreaming again?

Today

                      I miss my mummy

I was eating my CFA grilled chicken sandwich, so I missed mum’s call. I keep off the phone while I eat, she taught us that. At the motel, we’d eat as a family, no phones. Those were the 10 minutes of the day we spent with Dad. Dinner time. She made it our family meeting time.

Mom and Dad worked so much.

Your voicemail was so cute.
“Hughyo khe tu Bachu?”
“Did you go to sleep, my kiddo?”

I hate missing your calls. Moving this far from my parents was hard. I never know if it’ll be the last time they call. Or if I hear their voice.

But me living out my artist dreams is a form of loving them too. Because they didn’t have the time to dream. It was strictly survival.

I just miss her.
I wish she lived here too —
            She’s my best friend.

So tell your mum you love her, because today

I missed the chance to tell mine.
DID YOU FEED YOUR SOUL TODAY?
